Every 15 August, Luc-sur-Mer honours those who live from the sea: mass in the morning at the Notre-Dame de l’Espérance chapel, the blessing of the sea facing the waves, then a day of celebration ending with music and fireworks.
This is the 15 August gathering on the Côte de Nacre, and one of the oldest: a late-morning mass, a blessing of the sea given facing the Channel on Place du Petit Enfer in memory of lost sailors and fishermen, then a full day of entertainment along the seafront, closing with a concert and fireworks. Everything happens in Luc-sur-Mer, a ten-minute walk from Camping La Capricieuse: at the end of the evening you walk home along the seafront, without touching the car.

Everything takes place on the seafront, between the chapel and Place du Petit Enfer. 15 August is one of the busiest days of the summer in Luc: walking along the seafront is by far the easiest way to come.

Nothing is charged for: ceremony, entertainment and fireworks are open to all. The neighbouring towns of the Côte de Nacre hold their own sea festivals during the summer, a few kilometres away.

The blessing, facing the Channel
Mass brings together residents, seafaring families and holidaymakers in the Notre-Dame de l’Espérance chapel. The procession then makes its way to Place du Petit Enfer, facing the sea, for the blessing and the tribute to those lost at sea — a short, simple and very well-attended moment.
It is a tradition of the whole Normandy coast, born in the fishing ports and kept alive here by a seaside resort that has held on to its boats and its shore fishermen. The solemnity of the moment does not stop families from coming: the beach is right behind.
A concert on the square, then fireworks
The evening of 15 August is the high point of summer in Luc-sur-Mer: an open-air concert on Place du Petit Enfer, a seafront packed with people, then fireworks fired out over the Channel and visible from the whole length of the beach.
From the campsite you walk there and walk back, by the light of the seafront lamps. That is the great advantage of 15 August in Luc: no car to take out, no traffic jam once the show is over.
The week of 15 August, the busiest of all
Mid-August is the busiest period of the season on the Côte de Nacre: to stay at the campsite around the 15th you need to book several months ahead, especially for a family cottage.
Those who can shift their stay by a week find a quieter coast, the sea at its warmest and the first late-season rates — the Sea Festival, however, does not move.
