The WN 27 strongpoint bunker on the seawall at Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer

The seawall bunker

It belonged to the German strongpoint WN 27, which held the beach at Saint-Aubin. The 50 mm anti-tank gun is still in its casemate, facing the sand, and the concrete still bears the scars of the shells. You see it as you stroll by, no ticket, no opening hours.

The seawall and its villas

The promenade runs from Place de Verdun to Langrune, lined with Belle Époque villas and their ornate balconies; the Art Nouveau Villa La Loggia is a fine example. In summer, café terraces spread out facing the sea, perfect for a drink while the tide comes in.

The Acadians of Juno Beach

The North Shore Regiment came from New Brunswick, Canada, and many of its soldiers spoke French. On the morning of 6 June 1944 it landed on the Nan Red sector, in front of Saint-Aubin, facing the seawall strongpoint. An Acadian memorial honours them in the town, and every August the Acadian Week keeps alive the bond between the Côte de Nacre and Acadia. Discover the Acadian Week
