LE Mont Saint-Michel
Le Mont St Michel: The Marvel of the West
(1h30 from Luc-sur-Mer!)
Come to admire the Marvel of the West! This remarkable abbey by the sea seduces crowds and makes it the most visited monument in France. A masterpiece of Christian architecture, classified as UNESCO World Heritage, the Mont St Michel Abbey is placed in the middle of a bay living at the rhythm of the tides. Surrounded by mysteries, Mont Saint Michel strucks imagination: quicksands, sudden fogs, tides rising at the speed of a galloping horse.
Mont Saint-Michel welcomes nearly 3.5 million visitors each year, pilgrims and tourists. The mountain consecrated to Saint-Michel in 708, together with the Mont Gargan in Southern Italy, was one of the first places of worship of Michael Archangel. The abbey offers a complete panorama of medieval architecture from the 11th to the 16th century.
It si open every day except January 1, May 1 and December 25. Free visits or one-hour commentary visits every day (except special dates). Conference visits of about two hours, on weekends and every day during school holidays (except special dates).
