The most illustrious artists were inspired by Etretat, this romantic theater open on the Channel. A few moments on the spot are enough to understand why ... The singular shape of its cliffs, be it the Manneporte, the Courtine or the Aiguille, invite to the imagination.
Courtine, Manneporte, falaises d'Aval et d'Amont, le roc Vaudieu and l'Aiguille de Belval, these are the mysterious names of these sculptures carved by the waves into the chalk and flint of the plateau of Pays de Caux. Some will see the head of an elephant dipping its trunk in the waves, others, as Maupassant will claim that a ship could cross the arcade of the Manneporte. It is up to you to decide.
The man's hole
Once in 1792, when the sea was raging, a Swedish boat was thrown against the cliffs. The inhabitants of Etretat could only see the horror of the shipwreck. After 24 hours, the winds calmed down and the waves withdrew, revealing a cave at the bottom of which a man was laying. Simply unconscious, he woke up as he was carried to a common grave to join his unfortunate comrades. The "hole" that reminds us of this episode is now drilled and makes it possible to reach the beach of Jambourg. The passage is only passable at low tide. Check out the tide schedules before you go for a walk.

The old market
Once a farm, then a pond, the place became eventually a market. Small wooden buildings were replaced with market halls, now animated by charming shops.
